The Murder of Charlie Kirk

By Stephen Mitchell

Posted the day after Kirk’s murder

Yesterday, a brother in Christ was murdered. We, as a nation, are again shocked by the evil actions of one human being, made in the image of God, upon another human being, also made in the image of God. The depth of evil in one person’s heart has been openly exposed to the world’s view, and it shows exactly what God has said about us all along: “The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it? (Jeremiah 17:9)”

We were also told that such acts of depravity would be celebrated by other depraved hearts, as we also see happening today in our nation: “and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them (Romans 1:32)”

The Apostle Paul, no stranger to persecution because of his message of righteousness, reminds us that such murderous actions against those proclaiming the truth of Christ will be common: “Just as it is written, ‘FOR YOUR SAKE WE ARE BEING PUT TO DEATH ALL DAY LONG; WE WERE CONSIDERED AS SHEEP TO BE SLAUGHTERED.’ (Romans 8:36)” And they ARE very common today. Our fellow Believers are being killed in North Korea, Nigeria, India, Iran, Russia-controlled Ukraine, and in a whole host of other nations around the world. Everywhere the Gospel is preached, the children of the devil attack the children of God, often with murderous effect.

But Paul, in the verse right after, also reminded us, “But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us (Romans 8:37).”

Those giving themselves over to evil, though they may kill the body, are unable to destroy the soul of the Believer in Christ. Charlie Kirk conquered his assailant’s evil intent in that moment by being ushered into the “Joy of the Lord” through His faith in Christ: “Well done, good and faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master (Matthew 25:21, 23).”

So we pray for the Kirk family for comfort and peace in the midst of the pain of separation, as we should. We also pray for the soul of his killer that that person may also come to know the peace and comfort of forgiveness through faith in Christ. And we pray for the families and loved ones of all the Believers in Christ throughout this world that are “being put to death all day long.” And we remain faithful to our Heavenly Father, because “He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son (Colossians 1:13).” Even so, come Lord Jesus!
